More than forty picturebooks were brought to the author while she was in hospital for treatment of cancer. The paper tells how picturebooks supported her in the struggle with fear caused by the disease, and talks about the medicinal effect picturebooks may have. The picturebooks referred to in the paper include Errol Le Cain’s Mr Mistoffelees with Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer, Margaret Wise Brown’s Good Night, Moon, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, Verma Aardema’s Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain, and so on, along with works by Japanese artists, such as Mitsumasa Anno, Ryusuke Saito, Heijiro Taki, and Hideko Ise.
