In 1959, the first translation of the Man’yōshū into classical Chinese was published, edited by Sasaki Nobutsuna and translated by Qiān Dàosūn. This one work served an important role in the transmission and reception of the Man’yōshū and worthy of scholarly inquiry. This book was a joint effort between Sasaki and Qiān, and was a twenty-year project filled with twists and turns. The process of the book’s production can be said to reflect one aspect of Sino-Japanese cultural exchange during the crisis of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). This essay examines the process of the Kan’yaku Man’yōshū-sen’s formation through letters Qiān sent to Sasaki. It also clarifies the conditions surrounding the publication and the characteristics of Qiān’s poetic translation.
