There have been many studies on Iranian immigrants in the Western countries as well as many studies on Arab and Indian immigrants in the Persian Gulf countries. However, relatively few studies have focused on Iranian immigrants in the Persian Gulf. The purpose of this study is to understand specific patterns of labor migration from the Iranian plateau to Kuwait in the 1960s. This paper explores this topic on a micro-level through cases of workers with whom I conducted my field research about the zilu (cotton carpet) weaving industry in the Meybod region. The labor migration from the Meybod region on the Iranian plateau to Kuwait began in the 1950s and these migration trends became common in this region after the 1960s. The immigrants from Meybod first headed to Abadan, a city on the Iran-Kuwait border, where they took a motorboat and smuggled themselves into Kuwait during the night. After arriving in Kuwait, many of them began working as apprentice bakers. Once they started to enter the country officially with a passport and a visa, they ran bakeries and grocery stores. Although it is said that the Iranians tended to become construction workers in Kuwait, this was not the case with the people from the Meybod region.
