Abstract

This invited article is a revised version of a paper read at the symposium of the 30th Annual Conference of the JACET Chubu Chapter. In this article, the author makes an attempt to realize the 'commensurability' among different scopes and approaches in SLA research. He argues that four principles based on Saijo (2007, 2008), i.e., public/open nature, falsifiability, interest-correlativity, and structure-orientedness, are vital in devising a framework for achieving higher commensurability in research. He then applies the principles to the actual process of conducting SLA research and demonstrates how they work in it.
