Description
Nakai Riken (1732-1817) was a notable scholar of the Kaitoku-Do, a school that was recognized by the government and flourished in Osaka during the Edo era. Although his interpretation of "Kakubutsu-Chichi" is famously considered to be an original argument, according to research, it was in fact Goi Ranshu (1697-1762), Riken's teacher, who first argued similarly. Further, their argument was based on the theory of Chigyo-Heishin, which comes from neo-Confucianism. How then does the thinking of Ranshu and Riken differ? This paper compares their thought regarding "Kyuri," a word that has a deep relationship to "Kakubutsu-Chichi," as viewed in the development of Chigyo-Heishin.
