This paper discusses an unconventional work by Dazai Shundai (太宰春台) entitled the “Unconventional Annotations of Laozi” (『老子特解』), and is a significant pilot research work on “Laozi” by a member of the Sorai school( 徂徠学派). In his work, Shundai interpreted Dao (道) as the way of the ancient Chinese emperors, and ChangDao (常道) as nature in a political sense. Unlike other works, Shundai originally claimed that ChangDao, usually considered as abstract, was a reign system as well as Dao. The style of Shundai’s annotations reflects the influence of Zhuxi’s annotations( 朱熹注), and no other notes on “Laozi” achieved the same level of thoroughness. From the above, it is possible to argue that Shundai’s work reflects the achievement of the Sorai school methodology of classical rhetoric (古文辞学): the interpretation of letters through Chinese classics.
