説明

Yanagi Muneyoshi柳宗悦 (1886-1961), who was the founder of mingei (folk arts), and Bernard Leach (1887-1979), a potter, shared their thoughts and ideas on arts and crafts both East and West through letter exchanges. Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach, Letters-from 1912 to 1959 (published July,2014), contains many letters between Yanagi and Leach that are being published for first time. This book is particularly important because it includes many of Leach's letters; other books have contained mainly Yanagi's. It is a helpful collection for understanding Leach's ideas and perspectives. Yanagi and Leach decried dualism and lauded monism. After coming into contact with Korean ceramics, they realized that monism would be possible. Yanagi advocated mingei as a standard of beauty while Leach took Korean ceramics as the standard. By examining these letters it is possible to understand how Yanagi and Leach influenced each other. Leach remained active in Japan for many years, yet his works contain the aesthetic of Korea, which influenced him greatly.
