Abstract
Poems of Several Tang and Song Dynasty Poets and Some Quatrains is a book written by Shen Deqian(沈徳潜) at the age of 32. This collection of quatrains mainly criticizes poets in Tang and Song Dynasties, including Chen Zi’ang(陳子昂), Li Bai(李白), Du Fu(杜甫), Han Yu(韓愈), Wang Wei(王維), Meng Haoran(孟浩然), Liu Changqing(劉長卿), Liu Zongyuan(柳宗元), Wei Yingwu(韋応物), Bai Juyi(白居易), Li He(李賀), Li Shangyin(李商隠), Su Shi(蘇軾), Ouyang Xiu(欧陽修), Mei Yaochen(梅堯臣), four other poets in Yongjia(永嘉四霊), Zhejiang Province and Lu You(陸游), and others. These quatrains reflect Shen Deqian’s poetic views in his early years and deal with several significant poetic issues including the position of Tang poetry, the position of poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei and Meng Haoran, and the position of Tang-Song poetry in the poetic circle in Ming and Qing Dynasties. This paper first discusses the main content of the 12 quatrains together with Shen’s basic comments on poetry in Tang and Song Dynasty in his early years. Based on this, the poetic significance of the poem-commenting quatrains is elaborated on the history of poetic development in the Qing Dynasty.
