ABSTRACT : Theoretical arguments and empirical evidence have ascertained the interrelatedness and multicomponentiality of WTC in a L 2 in tandem with other constructs that affect L 2 communication. Given the intricacy of individual and contextual facets operating in the L 2 communication, pervasively the unwilling one, the conceptualization of WTC and other interrelated variables in specific contexts is pivotal to guiding the implementation and accumulation of context-specific L 2 use research. Focusing on Japanese students enrolled in overseas ESL schools, i.e. one of the most highly marketed yet the least researched educational settings, this conceptual study seeks to establish a contextually sensitive theoretical frame by forging an interface between the knowledge base from the applied linguistics community, in particular SLA research and that from intercultural contact one. The starting point for this theory-based attempt is to contextualize the WTC in a L 2 model from the former domain and the model of acculturation process from the latter with both individual and situational variables hypothetically identified from the models. Empirical research is to be conducted with an ultimate aim of scrutinizing the extent to which those variables impinge on Japanese students' communication with other students in English in a context where such opportunities are ample. Key words : overseas study, intercultural communication, SLA(second language acquisition), WTC(willingness to communicate), ESL(English as a second language)
