Abstract

This is a report of our field survey on 71 garden squares and 42 mews in London. London is rich in various types of open spaces. Among them the garden squares are unique compared with other open spaces in the world because they are managed or regulated. We focused on this peculiarity, and tried to apply our original two-axes, vertical and horizontal, diagram to analyze their degree of openness; one, for estimating aspects of human behavior, and the other, for estimating aspects that space inherently has. The 71 garden squares were classified into 6 types with 'garden area' and 'street area'. The openness of the 6 typical types was then estimated using our diagram. The representative cases and their characteristics were thus shown. We intend to check the validity of our diagram in the course of further surveys. Concerning the 42 mews, since they had similar degrees of openness, we additionally explained their general characteristics showing some samples.
