説明
Cynewulf twice used the adjective 'swete' (Mod. E. sweet) to describe a heroine in his poem, Juliana (1.93 and 1.166). Concerning these two examples, he translated the Latin word 'dulcis' in Acta Sanctorum, which is said to be the original, directly into Old English with the word 'swete.' However, his usage of 'swete' for women was very unique and, in a sense, quite modern in Old English literature, for 'swete' was generally used in reference to the human senses, e. g. of taste, of smell, of sound etc. in Old English. This paper will examine the meaning and the usage of 'swete' in Old English poetry and will analyze Cynewulf's unique usage of 'swete' for women.
