This is the sixth in a series that interprets today's adolescent psychology using the novels of Banana Yoshimoto, in this case the short story "Sanctuary." This interpretation is based on intuition analysis. This method is related to the phenomenological intuition concept and is applied in analyzing literary works or novels. The first scene of this story takes place at the seashore where the protagonist, Tomoaki, hears a young woman crying. She had come there to heal her deep grief. Tomoaki was also grieving. After this initial momentary contact, they coincidently meet again and come to spend time together. However, the story of their relationship is a subplot of this story. The chief plot concerns the sources of their grief. It is possible to say, therefore, that the primary protagonist is grief itself. The chief element of this novel is not action, but emotion. The development of emotion is dominant in all of Yoshimoto's novels, as is the use of synchronicity wherein characters bear similar mentality in common.
