説明

The heroines of Jane Eyre and Villette, Charlotte Bronte's two most important novels, are poor, plain, orphans. Characters such as these, whose beauty is not physical, but is revealed in their words and in the stories they tell about themselves, seem characteristic of Charlotte Bronte's works. The heroines of Shirley, however, the novel written between Jane Eyre and Villette, are beautiful. In addition to these beautiful characters, there are two old maids, described in detail in the chapter "Old Maids." They devote themselves to others and believe that their works are pleasing to God. In addition, the character Louis Moore is, like Jane Eyre, an orphan and must work as a tutor to earn his living. This paper will examine the genealogy and demonstrate the importance of the plain characters in Shirley.
