AbstractTechnology in the language classroom has caused disruption of late. Attention is one area that many teachers feel the need to address. A closer look at attention reveals there are cultural and linguistic differences in the concept and how it relates to attendance. Psychology and personal interactions affect attention when we factor in use of technology such as social media and constant access to the Internet. A large body of linguistic research on attention reveals that technology both enhances and confounds classroom interaction. The final section deals with suggestions for technology use to enhance attention in the classroom, or at least get students to recognize and use their intentional attention wisely.
