Description

Japanese university students usually take two General Academic English Classes, Reading and Communication, during their first two years. However, aims of these General Academic English Classes are unclear at many universities. The purpose of this study is to indicate the importance of conducting reading classes based on the concept of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). First, the analysis of major English textbooks used in high school shows that transition from high school English to Academic Reading for EAP is not very difficult. Second, a questionnaire given to first-year students who took a reading course indicates the importance of using a textbook that includes academic topics. These topics give students a chance to learn new information as well as English. It is also found that high level textbooks can encourage students to prepare for classes without translating every sentence into Japanese.
