The purpose of this study is to present viewpoints on the need to acquire "basic skills for living" as well as a good allocation of one's time throughout one's whole life by examining the lives of middle-aged men and women as they prepared for life as elderly persons, based on their time-use data. In conducting this study, I used data from a time-use survey of employed couples living in Setagaya, Tokyo, implemented in October 2005, and the "2001 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities" by the Japanese Statistics Bureau. I found that, first, the time allocation, particularly the distribution of paid work and housework, of middle-aged couples is unbalanced and, second, the division of roles between sexes among middle-aged couples tends to continue through their old age, as shown in the model of time allocation throughout one's whole life. Time allocation should be well-balanced throughout one's life, from the viewpoints of both gender equality and preventing the need for long-term care. It is important for both sexes to acquire skills in housework, which is directly connected to "basic skills for living". It is also important to develop a society in which people can achieve a good life-and-work balance.
