Description

When the earth structures, which retain water, are constructed, it is extremely problematic to find out the permeability which the earth structures have. Laboratory and in-situ permeability tests do not always represent actual fields. So, many methods, which identify coefficients of permeability, have been developed. Usually, a limited number of data is observed and only a small amount of information is obtained. The method, which identifies the coefficients of permeability of existing fill-type dams, has been developed by using the fuzzy theory. The observed data have not only stochastic sources of error but also many fuzzy ones. The available information (e.g., engineering judgement) can be utilized in addition to observed data if the fuzzy theory is employed. The identified coefficients of permeability repesents very well the observed seepage behavior. The comparison between the coefficients of permeability measured in laboratory and in situ, and identified ones are performed, too. The measured coefficients of permeability in the laboratory are much smaller than the measured ones in situ. The measured coefficients of permeability in situ are nearer to the identified ones. If many comparisons between the coefficients of permeability obtained by diffdrent methods are performed, reliance of earth structure will be increased.
