The primary purpose of this paper is to interpret gender perspective, which is based on “social constructionism,” mainly using Putnam’s internal realism and to explain the categories of “sex,” “women” and “men” from the perspective. According to the perspective, we cut up the world into “objects” within some scheme of description, and if inductions using existing categories regularly lead to false conclusions, such failures make us think those categories are wrong and that others should be employed instead. This paper tries to distinguish such gender perspective from relativism. That is to say, the secondary purpose of this paper is to show that, by introducing Laudan’s reticulated model into the gender perspective, we can secure the possibility to form consensus in factual beliefs, methodologies, and cognitive aims through rational arguments in scientific debates. In other words, we can make rational judgments to verify and correct factual claims about “man and woman.” We can decide rationally to employ the new methods instead of the traditional methods. For example, we can make factual beliefs based on women’s experiences, not based on the observations of men. Furthermore, we can resolve disagreement about cognitive values through rational discussion.
