説明

In the assessment of obesity, body composition analysis is eventually needed, since obesity is defined as being in excess of fat content. Most of body composition analyses are based on the model in which the body consists of two chemically distinct compartments, fat and fat-free mass. Criterion technique for estimating percent body fat is a densitometry with underwater weighing. Meanwhile, other techniques such as plethysmography, potassium counting, creatinine excretion and deuterium dilution have been also developed. These procedures, however, are time consuming, often considered as unpleasant by the subjects and impossible to apply in clinical practice. Therefore, a number of investigators have attempted to develop simple techniques, that is, anthropometry, bioelectrical impedance, infrared interactance and so forth. In relation to some obesity indices, this article briefly reviewed theories and practical procedures of indirect methods including some recent technologies for measuring human body composition.
