説明

The author conducted the following survey in order to find the etymology of Akita, the name of our home town. 1. Linguistically, Akita can be analyzed as Aki+ta. 2. Ta can refer to not only a rice paddy but also a wide swamp. 3. As for aki, the main theme of this paper, it can be: a) an independent place-name b) combined with other morphemes to make compounds such as Tai-aki, Aki-yama, Aki-Kawa, Aki-ba, Akiyoshi, Aki-fu, Aki-u, Aki-ru, Aki-ragi It has been learned from field work and literature surveyed that the name of a place or the component of the name with aki indicates a land slide, land fall in the mountains or an accumulation of humus, and that 'Aki', the season of fallen leaves, is associated with this same term aki.
