The purpose of this research is to investigate the Genealogy of Music Teachers in Akita Prefecture in the earliest years of School Education in Japan with a view to clarify the process in which singing education and western music came to spread in this region. The target period is from1872, when Japan's public education was formally promulgated, to 1912, when the Meiji Era was coming to a close. Results of this research are summarized in the following four findings. First, in Akita Prefecture, preparation for the start of singing education began in the latter half of the 10th year of Meiji.(i.e.,1877) by obtaining the approval from the Ministry of Education with the submission of the resume, teaching method, etc. of one woman teacher, Takalzaki, who was born in Shiga Prefecture and graduated from Tokyo Women's Normal School. However, she worked here only for a short period of time, or, most probably she might not have come to Akita at all. In the rural Akita area in those days, to find an excellent music teacher was thus a highly difficult matter. Second, a teacher native to Akita who had received a systematic music education for the first time was Saburo Aoyagi. After studying music education at a training school, he became a teacher at the normal school here, and played an active part as a pioneer of music education in Akita. Third, the music education in Akita Prefecture began to develop in earnest in the middle of the 30th year of Meiji(i.e.,1897),. Similar to other prefectures, teachers at Akita's normal school along with other teachers played a leading role in the promotion of music education and western music in the Akita area. Fourth, although it seems that the music level of Akita Prefecture in the early years of school education was not so high, it can be said that the efforts to educate the local people through music education achieved a certain success. The people in Akita also played an active part not only in promoting music education here but also in training and providing music teachers to various other areas of Japan.
