The porpose of this study is intended to investigate spread of winter outdoor sports in Akita in the later Meiji era Akita prefectureal governor and Akita educational society encouraged outdoor sports, especially outdoor sports in winter. For that porpose following steps were taken. 1. Intruduction of plays and games an outdoor. That methods set a good example for teachers and pupils. 2. Introduction of outdoor sports and games on snow. That were very good examples but that were little practical used by teachers and pupils. 3. Opening of skate rink on the moat of castle site and ice athletic meeting on Hachiro lake. Skete and ice athletic meeting on Hachiro lake was crowded with over one thousand people. 4. A course in skiing and the instructions to promote skiing. Skiing began to spread all over the prefecture rapidly in the end Meiji era.
