Description
How can a motive for nonviolence be given? This is the topic of this paper. We shall focus on the work on nonviolence activity called Satyāgraha (in Tibetan, bden pa’i u tshugs), written by Samdhong Rinpoche who is the prime minister (in Tibetan, bka’ blon khri pa) of the government of Tibet in exile. His work was published in 1995 when the possibility of Tibetans in exile wishing for violent way to a free Tibet increased. How did he lead Tibetan people to the path of nonviolence? He argues that the tragedy in Tibet was caused by people of Tibet themselves. And, it is karma (in Tibetan, las), he says. It is conceivable that the core of motivating nonviolence is in karma by which the Tibetan tragedy is explained. What is the principle within karma? This paper will clarify that it is the diachronic reciprocity with oneself, and the pre-establishing principle following the value of action.
