Abstract

There are various academic approaches to resolving global environmental issues and the study of the science of religion constitutes one such approach. This paper is situated among the various studies religions and ecology and focuses on the environmental thought of the 14th Dalai Lama as an example of a study of Buddhism and ecology, or a Buddhist approach to environmental issues. The Dalai Lama's environmental thought is characterized by non-violence toward all sentient beings. The issue, here, is whether plants and trees are included among sentient beings. In China and Japan, it is said that plants and trees can attain Buddhahood. In the Dalai Lama, however, plants and trees are not included among sentient beings, and therefore not among the direct objects of compassion. Therefore, their protection is based on the concept of interdependence.
