Abstract
This paper clarifies the evolution and the significance of designs of Tokonoma in houses by the architect Seiiti Sirai (1905-1983), as compared with the works of his contemporary architects. Japanese modem architects were eager to find a modem meaning in Tokonoma, and considered it to be an element in which the uniqueness of Japanese culture could reside. Sirai has been regarded as one of representative architects in Japanese-style. The forms of his Tokonoma ever executed can be classified into four types, in two of which the Otoshigake develops into the whole room, where the Otoshigake of the Tokonoma connects to a second Otoshigake to form a spatial difference in the ceiling level. According to Sirai's comments he considered the origin ofTokonoma to be found in the form of altar both in Occidental and Japanese architecture, giving a sense of holiness in the room. The evolution of his Tokonoma designs could indicate a deepening of his thought in its concrete realization.
