Abstract

Expertise in clinical psychology is considered to be different from the image of general expertise. The peculiarity of expertise is closely related to the nature of the field of clinical psychology. However, there have been few reviews regarding the literature on clinical psychology expertise. This study discusses expertise in clinical psychology and identifies viewpoints for examining such expertise. Discourses on expertise written by psychologists based on their clinical practice experience were overviewed. The results indicated that there are multiple levels of expertise in clinical psychology. Further, a new expertise image that was compatible with conflicting objects and has ambiguous spread and depth was suggested. It seems to be possible to understand expertise and the essence of clinical psychology through careful examination of characteristics between these contradictions and conflicts.
