Description

This research examines the design of EFL reading classes conducted by a non-native English speaker. Compared with other college-level EFL classes such as those which focus on oral communication, in reading classes, Japanese tends to be spoken more so than English. In order to create a class environment that encourages the use of English throughout, this paper discusses a method of using cooperative learning in conjunction with carefully designed scanning exercises in reading classes. Both activities allow instructors as well as students to use English more naturally during class time. Based on the original idea and students’ evaluation, this research is intended to start a discussion on ideas that have worked for the common goal of improving EFL reading classes.
