Abstract

In Japan, the first 'Guidelines for the Management of Stroke' was published in the beginning of 2004. We were responsible for compiling the information on primary prevention of stroke. We listed hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, atrial fibrillation, cigarette smoking, and alcohol drinking as the risk factors for stroke. After the publication of the Guidelines, new evidences were subsequently reported. Obesity and metabolic syndrome are now important topics of cardiovascular risk factors. In the revised Guidelines, we are adding the latest evidences on the risk factors of strokes and their prevention strategies.
