説明

type:text

The formal transmission of Buddhism from Paekche to Japan occurred in 538 or 552. Buddhism entered Japan relatively late when compared with entry into other Asian countries. A major problem in the acceptance of Buddhism in Japan was how to incorporate sculptures of foreign deities into a belief system which already had native gods. Supporters of the indigenous religion strongly opposed the imported deities. The resistance was not based on theoretical reasons, but on the belief that statues of Buddha were cursed. Ultimately it was the emperor's intention to accept the stigmatized foreign religion. But, why was Asuka chosen as the place of entry? This problem has not received much scholary attention. I have analyzed the character of the deities of Asuka and found that Asuka-dera was erected at the site of Makaminohara which was believed to fall beween the deity of Heaven, Kaguyama and the deity of Earth, Kannabiyama. This analysis reveals that the pluralistic aspect of Buddhism was an important factor in its develonment.
