The contrast between light and darkness constitutes both structural and thematic frames of The Prairie. Light symbolizes good while darkness symbolizes evil. Natty Bumppo preaches about the messianic death of Uncas and the resurrection of Hard-Heart. He also observes the Eucharist in the wilderness. He not only hold communion with God but also invites people and Hector to the Eucharist. Natty Bumppo's dog, Hector, symbolizes the natural world. Natty Bumppo who invites Hector to the Eucharist holds communion with nature.
