Abstract

Firstly the most important functions of Industrial Clusters are Flexible Specialization and Linkage Mechanism. Flexible Industrial Clusters are based upon the local collaboration networks among regional firms. We can regard such networks as the source of competitive advantages and the base of a demand buffer. Linkage firms use an open network effectively for connection in a market and Industrial Clusters. Such useful networks are called “Social Capital” in recent years.Secondly the most important functions of Social Capital are “bonding” and “bridging”.The former function means the effect of network closure. Network closure connects actors in the same area tightly. And we can expect that network closure brings about trust and cultivate norms and the mechanism of mutual constraints. The latter means the linkage between actors both inside and outside. So to speak the merit of a network openness. A network openness enables actors in the local area to experience newly useful information and to get resources and opportunities. But the effectiveness of Social Capital differs with contexts and aims of Industrial Clusters. This article is focusing on the spontaneous industrial supporting organization in the Kisogawa area known as Industrial Cluster of textile. And we analyze our investigation and discuss the function of the Kisogawa-Renaissance Project from the perspective of Social Capital theory.
