- Relationship between Soil Temperature and Development of Tillers in Paddy Rice Transplanted

Abstract
Effects of soil temperature upon the growth of tillers already emerged in the nursery and upon the development of tillering buds on the lower nodes were examined. The observations were made on the seedlings which had been kept for 10-15 days under the condition of 28-30°C in the higher temperature plots (H plots) and of 20°C in the lower ones (L plots), respectively. 1) The life and death of tillers are determined chiefly by the qualities of seedlings, although some influence exercised by soil temperatures could be seen according to the extent of growth of tillers. In H plots, well-grown tillers showed a vigorous growth, while almost all of weaklygrown tillers ceased from further growth and died. In L plots both continued to grow., 2) In the seedlings in whicn the greater part of roots were cut off at the time of transplantation, their weakly-grown tillers were stimulated to develop in H plots with the same kind of result as when those kept in L plots grew well. 3) Tillering buds located at the lower nodes attain their full development at a lower temperature, but cease to grow at a higher one. 4) The distribution of starch in the plantbody is markedly affected by a soil temperature, and this fact will be regarded as one factor on which the development of tillering buds located at the lower nodes as well as in that of weakly-grown tillers depends.
