Description

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of instruction in both formal and informal speeches for Japanese EFL learners. The subjects were ninety-one freshmen students at Niigata College of Nursing. They had learned English for six years at junior and senior high schools in Japan. Before entering the college, they have been exposed to almost no natural English. In the experiment, the subjects participated in two language activities which were expected to develop their communication skills. In the first activity, they listened to an audio-taped passage in formal style with almost no sound changes. The students repeated it a few times to practice typical English sounds. In the second activity, the learners watched video segments in rapid colloquial style with various sound changes. They then repeated specific lines, imitating the exact wording. The results of this study indicated that the subjects improved significantly in understanding and producing the sounds typical of English and their sound changes.
