In the Saddharmapundarika, when the daughter of Sagara declares that she has become a buddha, Sariputra raises an objection saying that no woman has ever occupied the positions as Indra, Brahman, universal monarch, four guardians of the quarters and buddha. However, he does not mean that women are hopeless forever. In Buddhist tradition, such positions are considered to be unattainable as long as one lives in a feminine body. This impossibility is neccesarily removed, if her mind transfers to a masculine body in the coure of transmigration. Abnormality in the case of Sagara's daughter is in speed: She becomes a buddha so rapidly that she has no time for transmigration. Therefore the change of sex is inevitable: Her feminine organ disappears and a masculine organ appears. Having seen this, Sariputra is reluctantly convinced.
