This study is based on my three-day lecture given at Hiroshima University in the summer of 2001. The students who attended my class showed interest in the phonetic aspect of English, particularly in learning how to transcribe its sound features using the Approximate Kana Transcription (AKT). In the first part of my paper I mentioned that in the case of English there is a wide gap between sound and spelling, and that to remedy this I proposed the use of IPA+or AKT which regularly represents English sound features. The rest of the paper is about each of the 40 attendants' own comments and feelings. It was found that almost all of them were pleased to know that all the English phonemic contrasts could be produced easily by AKT, and that their confidence in oral expression was enhanced by the use of IPA+or AKT.
