Description

The Olympic movie "Fest der Voelker" (directed by Leni Riefenstahl) was released in June 1940 in Japan. Comments on this movie appeared in magazines from May to July 1940. Although it was before the unification of all movie magazines into one government-controlled publication, most comments were written from the viewpoint of nationalism. But, a few were not. Of the ones that were not, some distanced themselves from nationalism and some referred to the beauty of the human body. However in that age of militarism when the nation was paying particular attention to people's physique, human beauty was simply a manifestation of nationalism itself. Therefore even comments referring to human beauty fell within the frame of nationalism. This was mediated by the fact that Riefenstahl described the beauty of 'the strong'.
