Echigo-Monjo-Hokanshu (historical documents of the Echigo region), Nakajoke- Monjo (historical documents written by Nakajo) and Miurake-Monjo (historical documents written by Miura) are the ancient writings of Buke (samurai families). This study examines kana orthography and vocabulary in these historical documents.
The results indicated that:
1. sound of the は (ha) column of the kana syllabary changes the わ (wa) column of the kana syllabary in the text.
2. ゑ(e) and お(o) are used as the written character indicating へ (he) and を(wo) (Japanese postpositions), respectively. These written forms reflect pronunciation.
3. kango (Japanese expressions originally from Chinese) are used 10 to 20 percent in historical documents written by women, and 30 to 50 percent in those written by men. In the historical documents written by women, many of the kango are written in kana. There are many kango written in kanji in the historical documents written by men. These differences are related to gender differences.
