How was the desire for learning awakened in the children and youth of Modern Japan? And how was enthusiasm for higher education created in their parents?

Following on from my last paper, this paper will outline the history of the creation and rapid spread of an education system with an emphasis on academic qualifications, and show that the spiritual and mental factors of the public, i.e. the desire for social success, in particular made possible the rapid spread of this “qualifications first” trend.

The focus of this paper is on:

1.Careerism and education.

2.Measures by the government to encourage elementary school attendance.

3.Overemphasis on academic qualifications―officialdom.

4.Entrance examination competition for secondary school and young working people.

5.Overemphasis on academic qualifications―business world.

6.Overemphasis on academic qualifications―postwar.

近代日本において、子ども・青年のなかにどのようにして勉学意欲が形成されたのか、あるいはまたどのような背景のもとに親の教育熱が産み出されたのか、この歴史を概観することがこの論文の目的である。

前回に引き続き、この論文では、日本人の勉学意欲や教育熱の形成と生成にに深く関わったとみなされる、日本で「学歴主義」と呼ばれているものの形成と歴史について、とりわけその「学歴主義」を受容し浸透せしめた国民の内面的、き因と考えられる社会的上昇志向の心情と信条について概観してゆくことにしたい。小論で焦点を当てたのは以下の諸点である。

1.立身出世主義と教育

2.政府の小学校就学督励策

3.学歴主義の形成―官界

4.中等学校試験競争と勤労青年

5.学歴主義の形成―実業界

6.学歴主義の浸透―戦後
