説明

Frobel's ideas on education was accepted in Japan in the forms of kindergartens. It means that the practice came before his theory in Japan. This paper shows how the people in the Meiji era studied his thought and how they applied it to their practical kindergarten education; the investigation was made by examining seven papers written by four Japanese scholars between 1888 (20th year of Meiji) and 1913 (the last year of Meiji). All the authors of those seven papers refer to Frobel's main work "Education of Man" written in 1826. The "Gift" was used at eyery kindergarten without a clean understanding of its real meaning. Although they seem understand Frobel's ideas of universe and human being, none of them refer to his religion that makes the essence of his thought. The conclusion of my investigation is as follows: Frobel's ideas on education was not accepted with a full understanding. The main reason is that they did not uaderstand his religion, Christianity. Many kindergartens were built all over Japan, but at most of them children were not educated through Frobel's real ideas on education.
