Departmental Bulletin Paper

Eveline, the fourth story in James Joyce's Dubliners, is a pathetic, if somewhat bizzarre, story about a girl who wanted to leave Dublin for another life, but was frustrated by an inevitable and tragic catastrophe. This essay is an attempt to probe the possible hidden drama of the protagonist's apparently innocent narrative, with emphasis on the strong psychic bond between Eveline and her mother, Eveline's psychological process, and the role that the motif of the Sacred Heart plays in the story. It also discusses in detail the question of what is happening to Eveline at the end of the story and the significance it may have.
