Abstract

The purpose of this research was to clarify the issues in workplace support for capacity building by reviewing the literature about the current status of five competencies required of nursing teachers and workplace support according to years of experience (novice, mid-level, expert) of the nursing teachers. In the bibliographic web database of the Japan Medical Abstracts Society, we systematically searched for the following terms in Japanese: “nursing teacher,” “educational practice,” “communication skills,” “nursing practice,” “management skills,” and “research capabilities.” We searched the databases of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare GRANTS SYSTEM in addition to reports of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The results revealed that novice nursing teachers had no confidence in the following competencies: “educational practice,” “communication skills,” and “management skills.” In addition, mid-level nursing teachers had no confidence in their “management skills,” while the expert nursing teachers had no confidence in their “nursing practice.” All nursing teachers had no confidence in their “research capabilities.” As support for the workplace, opportunities for reflection on case studies and introduction of nursing teacher's career ladder have been reported, suggesting the possibility of improving ability through support at these workplaces.
