説明

The aim of the present study is to examine the care of elderly patients with dementia, caused by conditions related to Parkinson's disease, by nurses with little experience in dementia care, and to elucidate the nurses' perspectives on patient behaviour and care. Interviews were conducted with three nurses working in dementia wards, utilising qualitative inductive reasoning methods. The nurses were asked to discuss case examples, in particular, situations in which it was difficult to provide care but nurses felt they were able to provide valuable assistance. The analysis revealed six major categories: `create an environment and pay attention to prevention and fulfilling basic needs', `investigate the reasons for BPSD', `remain involved', `respect the state of the patient', `encourage and promote patients' hidden strength and a sense of satisfaction', and `adjust lifestyles through cooperation with a multidisciplinary team'. In each situation experienced by the nurses, the fulfilling of basic human needs and the support of characteristic symptoms, together with changes in perspectives on preventative measures, were observed, and their interaction resulted in a respect for the state of the elderly dementia patient.
