西川如見(1648-1734)は長崎の人で天文学者・地理学者である。彼は地形を科学的に観た最初の日本人学者である。なぜならば彼は著書『怪異辨断』(1715)において,天文と地文(自然地理)に関係した諸現象について科学的に論じている。彼は当時,西洋の地球球体説を理解していた数少ない日本人学者の一人であり,同書において,地球が丸いことを科学的に解説している。如見はまた,『怪異辨断』において多くの自然地理ないし地形学的現象について論じ,それらは怪異ではなく,科学的合理的に説明できる自然現象であることを説いた。例えば彼は,地すべりを,その土地の地質・地形的な性質と結び付け,一種の簡易な実験を用いて説明した。彼はまた,世界各地の自然地理～環境に関する情報,例えばイタリアの火山やアラビアの沙漠などに関する情報も紹介している。

It is believed that the study of geomorphology began in Japan in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. However, this article will demonstrate that scientific views on landforms were established in Japan much earlier than previously believed. Joken Nishikawa (1648-1724), an astronomer and geographer that lived during the middle of the Edo Period (1600-1868) in Nagasaki, is perhaps the first Japanese scholar to hold scientific views on landforms. This conclusion is drawn because of his book discussing phenomena related to astronomy and physical geography entitled "Kai-i bendan" (1715 ; literally "Interpretations of Wonders and Disasters"). At that time, Nishikawa was one of the few scholars to understand the Western idea of the earth as a sphere. "Kai-i bendan" provides a scientific explanation of the notion that the earth is round. Nishikawa also discussed many geomorphological phenomena and provided rational explanations. As an example, Nishikawa related landslides to the geological and geomorphological nature of an area using a kind of simple experiment. He also provided information about the physical geography and environment of the world like volcanoes in Italy and the Arabian desert.
