Abstract

Both Japan and Australia have been promoting a transition from residential care to home care for the elderly. In Japan, however, the elderly have no choice but to be relocated whereas aging-in-place has been achieved in Australia. What does contribute to this difference? To learn how nursing care continues from health care institutions to community to promote home care in Australia as well as to assess the current situation of residential care,we toured and attended lectures at a visiting care service provided by an acute-phase hospital in Melbourne, a community care service agency, and a residential care institution for the elderly. As a result, it was revealed that there was a disparity in the amount of the public assistance allocated to the health care and welfare systems and home care between Japan and Australia, and this fact was indicated to have caused the difference of care in the elderly between two countries.
