Description
Capt. L. L. Janes, who guaranteed high-quality education and welfare to the students at the Kumamoto Yo-Gakko between 1871 and 1876, lost his teaching job after his students signed the covenant called Hokyo-shui-sho at the top of Hanaokayama. Then, although he was hired at the Osaka English School, he went back to the United States six months later. The letters reveal not only Rev. Maundrell's contact with some of Janes' students in the summer of 1875, but also Janes' footsteps after his retirement from Kumamoto to Osaka, a neighboring prefecture of Kyoto, a strong bond between him and his students, and the excellent academic performance and serious mission work of the students who entered the Doshisha School, Kyoto, from the Kumamoto Yo-Gakko. Moreover, this study scrutinized his self-respect as a layman holding religious enthusiasm, which brought him a series of hardships. These letters indicate that Janes' landmark achievement was to enlighten his students in Kumamoto.
