「仮定法現在」はイギリス英語よりもアメリカ英語での使用頻度が高いと言われることが多いが、コーパスデー タを見ると必ずしもそのようには言えない。本稿は、BNC を用いたデータを用いて、実例を採取することで、イギ リス英語における仮定法現在の実態について考察する。

It is widely acknowledged that the present subjunctive is more often used in American English than in British English. It seems, however, this view does not reflect the actual usage of the grammar in comtem- porary British English. This article will deal with the reality of the use of subjunctive present in British English based on the data from British National Corpus.
