The purpose of this study was to examine the environmental conditions surrounding intercollegiate rugby football in Japan. The teams surveyed included 48 teams which belong to the Kanto University taikousen A Group, Kantou University League Division I, Kansai University League A, Toukai University League A, Touhoku University League A and Kyushu University League Division I. The environment surrounding intercollegiate rugby football was surveycal in terms of three factors; hardware, software, and members. Hardware factors concerned: (1) the grounds; (2) the place of weight training; (3) the dormitory・residential camps. Software factors involved the (4) coaches; (5) sporting equipment; and (6) sponsorship contracts. Additionally, about (7) members wrer examined. The principal results were as follows. 73.3% of the Kantou・Kansai areas and 44% of regional areas owned their own grounds for their own private use. The average number of coaches per university was 5.7 in the Kantou・Kansai areas and 1.9 in regional areas. Five universities sign endorsement deals in the Kantou・Kansai areas, but none are signed (0) in regional areas. Based on all remaining questionnaire items, it was clear that the Kantou・Kansai areas are in a more advantageous environment than regional areas. From the fact that the Kantou・Kansai areas are in more advantageous environment than regional areas, it was strongly suggested that we need to create a more favorable environment for universities in these regional areas in order to promote University rugby.
