After the Second World War, many of the south-eastern and southern Asian countries gained their independence. However, it was yet extremely difficult for those countries to be independent from the existing subordinate economic system which they had been forced to accept under the colonial policy. Under such circumstances, it became apparent that their economic independence would not be achieved even if they frequently tried to implement economic development plans or if they were given any economic aid from outside. During the period of 1960's and 1970's, those developing countries received substantial aid from the United Nations as well as other individual countries, whereas, at the same time, the need of their own efforts to develop their economies were strongly required. At this occasion, were illustrated as a good example the facts that Japan was successfully shifted to capitalism at end of the 19th century, namely after about 30 years from the opening of the country in 1868, and that she became a great economic power within 20 years since the end of the war in her defeat in 1945. I have always emphasized that it is possible for the developing countries to obtain incomes through the development of tourist potential, which would result in securing of funds for their economic development. Also, I have shown many examples of the success in obtaining foreign currencies by making the best use of tourist resources in each of the countries. I prepared this paper as an introduction to the study of economic development in developing countries. October 23, 2002
