This paper takes up the rank and function of the Japanese traditional colors, with the special reference to the color of white. The results of the survey are follows: (1) In the special festival, shinsyoku or people in Shinto's divine occupation, wear hou which is a coat hitoe. This costume is not classified into rank by colors. (2) The white costume implies the Japanese spiritual origin of kami, which is homonym of both "upward" and "god."
