It has been pointed out that to describe the human's five senses is one of the characteristic features of Takuboku Ishikawa's TANKA. However, his grasp of human senses expressed not only in his TANKA but also his novels. A short story "BERODO" or velvet in English is the one of the best examples. This story compares urban life (in Tokyo) to rural life (in Sibutami Village). The means of the comparison what Takuboku takes in the story is to describe the sensual stimulations. This paper insists that speech is the important elements in this short story. Heroine (Osada) and her friend (Oyae) are mystified with Tokyo accent, and dreaming of the city life. But, as the story is progressed, Osada takes back her identity in the accent of her village. The BERODO indicates that human voice is the important for the formation of auditory sense and one's identity.
